Finance Manager - Los Angeles, CA
Job Responsibilities: The Finance Manager Acts as the primary liaison to the Development department and prepares budgets for grant proposals and programs, tracks all funding with regards to expenses, prepares financial reports for funders, and performs variance to budget analysis in conjunction with program staff. Performs Contract Management to determine revenue coverage by program and by fiscal year; recognizes contracted expenditures as they incur; and ensures compliance with Financial Accounting Standard Board Pronouncement No. 116 "Accounting for Contributions Received and Contributions made" (FASB 116). Assists with the management of business operations of MALDEF Property Management Corporation Including, but not limited to: leasing commercial office space, reviewing tenant lease contracts, and handling building services (security, housekeeping, etc.) billing issues. Reviews engineering and maintenance recommendations made by Building Engineer, and when necessary, will solicit input from third party expert resources. The Finance Manager assists the Vice President of Finance/CFO with developing, managing and periodically reviewing and assessing financial control systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS) and also assists with the development of the annual budget and prepares reports and analyses of budget variances.
Qualifications and Experience:Must have a Bachelor's Degree with a major in Accounting, Finance or related field. Active Certified Public Accountant License required. Minimum 6 years experience in related position is required. Prior supervisory experience is required. Must have outstanding organizational and administrative skills, including ability to interact with staff, elected and appointed officials, corporate/business representatives, and the general public. Excellent computer skills, particularly with accounting and spreadsheet software; skill in performing office automation duties using software applications such as spreadsheets, electronic mail, database management, and accounting software is a must. Excellent verbal and written communications skills, with particular attention to detail and accuracy, are required. Strong analytical and problem solving skills required; and must be able to handle multiple tasks and to organize and prioritize a heavy workload efficiently.

Parent School Partnership Program Assistant - Los Angeles, CA
Job Responsibilities: Supports the Director of National Parent School Partnership Program in daily activities and also in achieving intermediate and long-term goals by: preparing and editing correspondence, reports, and training manuals; translating flyers, reports and manuals from English to Spanish; managing the department's FileMaker database, entering contact reports and next steps; and responding to and relaying telephonic and electronic communications; Assists in the planning, organizing, and recording of meetings, special events and other activities in cooperation with the other community education department staff and program participants, including, but not limited to the coordination of: event site or meeting room reservations; catering; participant outreach and confirmation; and recording, preparation and distribution of meeting minutes. Maintains electronic calendar, and schedules meetings with staff, donors, and community members. Coordinates with staff to schedule community outreach requests. Makes travel arrangements, coordinates travel plans, and prepares itineraries and briefing notes for the National Parent School Partnership Director. Maintains National Parent School Partnership office files and database systems by collecting incoming reports and documents; maintains an effective retrieval system, and enters data into database system on a regular ongoing basis. Processes invoices, creates spreadsheets, reconciles accounts, and prepares check requests. Reviews drafted legislation, federal guidelines, newspapers, periodicals and the internet to stay informed of general developments and emergent issues related to educational access for Latinos. Maintains database to track educational legislative developments across the United States. Reviews legislative proposals for impact on Latino educational opportunities and access and works with Community Education staff to develop policy analysis and fact sheets.
Qualifications and Experience:Bachelors Degree and two (2) years experience in an educational, research, public policy, fundraising or nonprofit setting required. Demonstrated proficiency in English language usage, grammar, spelling, and syntax to compose, edit, and proofread correspondence, reports, and written materials. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish is required. Must be able to travel by airplane or automobile as required.

Education Legislative Staff Attorney - Washington, D.C.
Job Responsibilities: Analyzes and drafts legislation, policy issues and proposals, governmental regulations, rules, and executive orders. Researches, analyzes and prepares recommendations, position papers, testimony and other document. Participates in developing short- and long-term plans and strategies for legislative analysis and advocacy, preparing memoranda on potential and pending legislation. Regularly attends meetings with legislators and/or their staff, as well as hearings, press conferences, and relevant legislative meetings to submit written materials, to articulate MALDEF's position on educational issues and legislation, and to obtain information. Develops and maintains an appropriate network of ties to other organizations, experts, and interested and knowledgeable individuals with similar interests and goals, initiates and maintains coalitions, attends community events, and presents policy positions. Prepares reports of substantive legislative trends and relevant actions initiated and taken to promote advocacy of positions, and any continuing efforts in coalition building, lobbying or legislative strategies. Qualifications and Experience: Juris Doctor and active bar membership are required. At least 3 years progressively responsible experience in education, civil rights, and public interest fields are preferred. Evidence of ability to apply legal or educational training to legislative analysis is required. Excellent research, writing, and communication skills required.

Legal Secretary - Chicago, IL
Job Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Regional Counsel, the Legal Secretary is responsible for preparing legal documents for filing with state or federal court and for service on opposing counsel/parties using word processing software (MS Word and WordPerfect) and for maintaining pleading/brief dockets, correspondence files, and related files for cases in litigation or under investigation by attorneys in regional office. The Legal Secretary maintains office calendar and tickler system for important court dates, deadlines, and other appointments; prepares and/or finalizes business correspondence, memoranda, and other documents for mailing and/or other distribution; prepares exhibits for use at trial, in a hearing, or as attachments to documents/briefs; collates, numbers, sorts, and files documents and other materials produced by or for opposing party in discovery; drafts simple correspondence and memoranda; prepares expense forms and check requests for attorneys; types, collates, and when necessary, calculates attorney hours for recovery of fees from opposing party; answers telephones and completes business telephone calls to confirm appointments and court appearances; and serves as receptionist.
Qualifications and Experience: The successful candidate will have two (2) years experience performing secretarial or clerical tasks in professional office environment. Law office experience highly preferred.
