Board of Directors
Executive Commitee
Chairman of the Board
Thomas B. Reston
Attorney at Law
(Washington, DC)
With over 30 years of experience with MALDEF, Thomas B. Reston currently serves as the Chairman of the Board. Since 1974, when he was first introduced to and worked for MALDEF as outside counsel on the Voting Rights Act, Mr. Reston has been involved with the organization as a member of the Board of Directors, long-time chairman of the Program and Planning Committee, and the first non-Latino elected as Chairman of the Board in 1996.
Mr. Reston began his career as a newspaperman, reporting from the South and abroad. In the early 1970s, he became very involved in Virginia and national politics, working on numerous campaigns and twice getting elected as the Secretary for the State Democratic Party of Virginia. From 1974-77, he practiced law with the firm, Hogan & Hartson in Washington, D.C., and from 1977-1980, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs and Deputy Spokesman of the United State Department of State, where he held daily press conferences and spoke for the U.S. government on all foreign-policy matters. Since the early 1980s and continuing today, he has practiced international law through his private practice in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Reston is a graduate of Harvard College and University of Virginia School of Law. He is married to Victoria Kiechel and has two children, Laura and James. He recently finished writing a book about the intellectual traditions of the Democratic Party, due to be published this coming winter, after the fall 2010 elections.
