Mid-Career Leadership Development
|
|

|

|
| With the support of the San Francisco Foundation, MALDEF established the Mid-Career Leadership Development Program in 1980. The program was designed to prepare mid-career Latinos for leadership roles by developing personal skills and a knowledge of local, state and national policy-making processes.
The San Francisco program was replicated in Los Angeles, Orange County, Alameda County and Santa Clara County in California; in Denver, Colorado; in Chicago, Illinois; and San Antonio, El Paso, and Dallas in Texas. To date, it has trained nearly 2,100 individuals.
Each five year Leadership Development Program sites offers a curriculum that includes:
- leadership development and theory
- personal development
- community development
- advocacy, organization and management skills
- public policy and issue development
- communications skills
- board development
PROGRAM GOALS:
- Continuation of Existing Programs: Bring to a successful close the program operating in Fresno, California (5th Year).
- Establishment of New Programs: Launch a new program in Phoenix, Arizona.
- Curriculum: Develop a national standardized curriculum.
- Fundraising: Continue to raise funds for this program on a national level and supplement that national fundraising with local support.
- Capacity Building for Program Continuity: Develop and test strategies for imbedding each program in its community to ensure that this resource for leadership development will exist after its five year operation by MALDEF. This could involve documenting the success of the El Paso program where the MALDEF Alumnae Association, La Asociacion de Líderes México Americanos (ALMA) and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce have formed a collaborative effort to continue the program.
- Monitor Effectiveness: Continue to monitor the placement of graduates on policy-making boards and commissions.
