This year's MALDEF Latino State of the Union marked the 5th annual roundtable on law, policy, and civil rights with national leaders and experts convened in Washington, D.C. The event featured special remarks by MALDEF's Chairman of the Board, Thomas B. Reston, a keynote address by United States Secretary of Labor, Hilda L. Solis, with a moderated discussion and opening remarks by MALDEF's President and General Counsel Thomas A. Saenz.

Thomas A. Saenz, MALDEF President and General Counsel, stated, "The Latino community faces significant challenges in working to shape a national policy agenda that incorporates our concerns and that will achieve a bright national future for all. Today's lively discussion will help us to better understand and take on those challenges. We are grateful to all of those who participated in this step toward an improved national policy agenda."
More than one hundred public officials, community advocates and national leaders gathered at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. to engage in the discussion on the pressing issues facing Latinos in 2012. Discussions emphasized the reality that Latino community interests are and will increasingly be recognized as national interests.
Members of the prominent panel included: Mercedes Marquez, Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; Juan Cartagena, President and General Counsel of LatinoJusticePRLDEF; Jessica González-Rojas, Executive Director of the National Latino Institute for Reproductive Health; and Professor Roberto Suro, Director of the Tomás Rivera Policy Institute at the University of Southern California.
Issues discussed included: immigration, economic development, reproductive justice, housing, civil rights, education, and voter mobilization.
