Message from the President & General Counsel

This momentous year, with yet more record-breaking electoral participation by Latinos in last month's presidential election, has seen many achievements in establishing how integral the Latino community is and has been to our nation's historical and future progress. Yet, we still face challenges. Even the holidays are not immune. We all know how important the Christmas season is to many in the Latino community, and music is a part of many holiday celebrations. Yet, when we listen to holiday music on the radio, with few exceptions, Latino people and traditions are left out. Below, you will learn of an important effort to address that absence through an exceptional musical release, linking Mexican musical traditions and traditional American carols. As you celebrate the holidays, I urge you to download and listen to this unique release. And you can feel even better about it because a portion of the proceeds will benefit MALDEF and three other worthy causes. Happy holidays to all!

Sincerely Yours,

Thomas A. Saenz

RONSTADT GENERATIONS Y LOS TUCSONENSES RELEASES "MEMORIES OF CHRISTMAS," A COLLECTION OF HOLIDAY SONGS WITH PART OF PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT MALDEF

LOS ANGELES, CA – MALDEF is proud to support the release of "Memories of Christmas," a new collection of holiday songs recorded in Mexican musical styles by the group Ronstadt Generations.

The songs on "Memories of Christmas," all performed in English, include " Joy to the World," "White Christmas," Silent Night," "We Three Kings," and "First Noel."

The music will be available for digital download starting December 16, 2013 at http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/RonstadtGenerations, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting MALDEF, The Eva Longoria Foundation, The Dolores Huerta Foundation, and LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes. The song arrangements were developed under the musical leadership of Michael J. Ronstadt, the younger brother of famed recording artist Linda Ronstadt , whose "Canciones de mi Padre" collection of mariachi music became the biggest selling non-English album in recording history. "We have produced original arrangements of traditional holiday music that truly reflect the multicultural roots of my family and the changing demographics of our country," said Michael Ronstadt, who performs with his sons Michael G. and Petie as the Tucson-based folk group Ronstadt Generations. Ronstadt has revived his grandfather’s former big brass band from 1889 called the "Club Filharmonico y Los Tucsonenses" with modern day musicians. He brought together "Los Tucsonenses" to collaborate on the songs, which were arranged and recorded in Tucson, Arizona. Among the collaborators on the project was David Damian Figueroa, MALDEF's Vice President of Strategic Development and Communications, "I’m really proud of this project. It warms my heart that we are able to share the proceeds with four non-profit groups that I truly love."
