April 30, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC – The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), the nation’s leading Latino legal civil right organization, applauds Senator Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) for his leadership on the issue of comprehensive immigration reform. Today Senator Schumer, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Refugees, will hold a hearing titled “Comprehensive Immigration Reform in 2009, Can We Do It and How?”

"Comprehensive immigration reform is an issue of critical importance to all Americans at all levels of society," stated Henry Solano, Interim President and General Counsel of MALDEF, former federal prosecutor as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and former U.S. Attorney for Colorado. "Our nation faces challenges on all fronts that beg our attention; nonetheless, we must not lose sight of the millions of immigrants and their families in the U.S. who await resolution on this issue."

"MALDEF supports Senator Schumer’s vision in driving the conversation of immigration this year,” stated John Amaya, MALDEF Legislative Staff Attorney. “This is a strong message that this Congress, along with the Obama Administration, is serious about fixing our nation’s broken immigration system and leading America in the right direction."

MALDEF is committed to working with 111th Congress and the Obama Administration to advance fair and comprehensive immigration reform legislation.
