Sign the Petition to Veto SB1070

At a recent news conference in our nation’s capital, hosted by U.S. Representatives Luis Gutierrez (IL) and Raul Grijalva (AZ), I called on “Governor Brewer to recognize that SB 1070 goes well past the line where political symbolism becomes dangerous policy and irresponsible lawmaking. This law is an open invitation to racial discrimination, community discord, and naked clash between state and federal government. The law's constitutional flaws will inevitably attract costly legal challenges, to the detriment of all Arizona. Responsible leadership demands a veto.”

The legislation undermines public safety by deterring public cooperation with law enforcement authorities and diverting scarce resources away from combating serious and violent crimes. Law enforcement experts, including the Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police and the Major Cities Chiefs Association widely oppose similar measures for the same reasons.

The Petition

Our community is under attack - we face yet another oppressive piece of legislation.

This bill, SB1070, is currently before Arizona Governor Jan Brewer awaiting her signature. SB 1070 makes it a misdemeanor to lack proper immigration paperwork in Arizona. It also requires police officers to determine a person's immigration status.

MALDEF has called on the Governor to do what is right and veto this legislation which poses a significant threat to the general welfare and fundamental freedoms of the people of Arizona.  Should she not heed our petition, MALDEF will do what it has successfully done in the past and defend the civil and human rights of Latinos through our courts.
