Staff Attorney – Chicago, IL

Job Responsibilities: In consultation with co-counsel inside and outside of MALDEF, devises and executes strategic plans in complex litigation through the following activities: conducts depositions and discovery, negotiates and monitors settlement agreements, and pursues attorney fee awards in civil rights litigation; conducts legal research and draft pleadings, briefs, and administrative complaints; devises investigation plans and investigates potential legal claims; prepares memoranda on budget and legal theory for approval of litigation by MALDEF management; responds to media inquiries, makes public presentations, and prepares community education materials regarding Latino rights; analyzes proposed legislation for impact on Latino interests and drafting and delivering testimony before legislative bodies; participates in the development of long-term strategic goals and objectives for the assigned program area and also for the regional office; supervises volunteer and professional support staff assigned to assist litigation programs.

Requirements: Juris Doctor or equivalent degree required; active bar membership in one or more states required. Eligibility for active bar membership in Illinois required. Bar membership in another Midwestern state is desirable. Undergraduate or graduate instruction in public policy and/or social sciences is desirable. Federal and state court litigation experience, particularly in area of civil rights, immigration, or employment is desirable.

Youth Leadership Program Coordinator – Los Angeles, CA

Job Responsibilities:  Responsible for program implementation at Pacoima middle and high school sites; participant outreach and recruitment; organizing and teaching the curriculum; securing artists for workshop activities; creating and collecting pre and post surveys from participants; and coordinating volunteer opportunities, field trips, receptions; and other program related events. The Youth Leadership Program Coordinator utilizes the Youth Leadership Program curriculum to educate high school students throughout Los Angeles and collaborates with the National Parent School Partnership Director to continue developing and adapting the curriculum. Works closely with the National Parent School Partnership Director to develop annual work plan and is responsible for achieving program objectives within the allotted time frame. Fosters and maintains effective professional relationships and partnerships with organizations, school administrators, educators, community leaders, parents and students.

Requirements: The successful candidate will hold a Bachelor’s Degree and will have at least 2 years of successful experience working with high school students. Experience working with Latino communities and organizations in Los Angeles and excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish are also required. The position requires an individual with a high degree of initiative who is able to work with minimal supervision; with an availability to work a variable work schedule to include evenings and weekends; must have a valid California Driver License, liability insurance, access to an automobile; and must possess both the ability and willingness to travel as required.

Salary:

MALDEF offers valuable internship opportunities for dedicated individuals who want to get involved in MALDEF's litigation, public policy, and community advocacy work. Law students are encouraged to apply for the competitive Law Clerk Summer Internship program. There are also internship opportunities available with the Parent School Partnership (PSP) program.
