MALDEF STATEMENT ON TRUMP’S UNLAWFUL EXECUTIVE MEMORANDUM

LOS ANGELES, CA – Thomas A. Saenz, president and general counsel of MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund) issued the following statement in response to Donald Trump’s memorandum to the Secretary of Commerce that seeks to alter the required count of every person for the purpose of reapportionment by excluding some immigrants.

MALDEF Response to Alabama’s Revised Attempt to Exclude Immigrants from 2020 Census Data

Saenz, president and general counsel of MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund) issued the following statement in response to Alabama’s decision to amend its lawsuit filed last year that seeks to force the Census Bureau to exclude undocumented immigrants from the 2020 Census data used for reapportionment:

LOS ANGELES – A federal judge in Maryland held a telephonic conference today following the president’s tweet that is at odds with the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling and the federal government’s own statement to the court indicating the Trump administration would be moving forward with Census 2020 without a citizenship question.
