Yesterday, Latino Justice PRLDEF and MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund) joined the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) in challenging the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity. The amended complaint adds seven plaintiffs who seek to enjoin the Commission, which we contend was created to discriminate against voters of color.

MALDEF STATEMENT ON COURT RULING IN TEXAS REDISTRICTING PLAN
San Antonio, TX – A federal court today struck down portions of the current Texas congressional redistricting plan. A three-judge panel unanimously ruled that certain boundaries in the current congressional redistricting plan, which were carried forward from the plan enacted in 2011, intentionally discriminated against Latino voters and diluted Latino voting strength.
TRIAL BEGINS MONDAY IN MALDEF CHALLENGE TO TEXAS REDISTRICTING PLAN
San Antonio, TX – MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund) will represent the Texas Latino Redistricting Task Force and 17 individual Latino voters at a five-day trial starting Monday challenging the Texas Legislature’s 2013 redistricting plan for the Texas House. That plan reduces the ability of Latinos to elect the candidates of their choice in violation of the federal Voting Rights Act.

FIFTH CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS TO HEAR ORAL ARGUMENT ON PASADENA, TEXAS FEDERAL VOTING RIGHTS ACT CASE
Houston, TX – MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund) will present oral argument to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017. MALDEF will be arguing in opposition to a request by the City of Pasadena, Texas to use the election system that was struck down by a lower court in the City’s 2017 municipal elections.
