The Retirement Of U.S. Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter

May 04, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC – MALDEF Interim President and General Counsel Henry Solano issued the following statement in response to news that U.S. Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter will retire from the nation’s highest court:

MALDEF thanks Justice Souter for his work, record and dedication as a jurist who viewed the Constitution as a living breathing document which can evolve with our nation’s society. It is our expectation that the next Supreme Court Justice will carry Justice Souter’s independence and fierce defense of individual rights.

President Obama has the opportunity to nominate someone to the Supreme Court who will carry on – well beyond his presidency – his legacy of hope, breaking barriers, and inclusiveness. I can think of no better moment for him to nominate the Supreme Court’s first Hispanic and someone who will uphold our Constitution’s promise of equal justice and freedom for all.
