LOS ANGELES – A Colorado resident, who allegedly was denied services by a student loan refinancing and consultation company, has reached a confidential settlement agreement with the company.

The 2024 lawsuit challenging the policy of GradFin was filed by MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund) on behalf of Roberto Roca Hernandez, a recipient of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) since 2012. The case was resolved on mutually agreeable, confidential terms. MALDEF attorneys alleged that Hernandez was prevented from refinancing his private student loans because he was not a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident. GradFin denies all allegations brought in the lawsuit.

Since 2017, MALDEF has filed 23 lawsuits challenging discriminatory banking policies that target immigrants and settled more than a dozen.
